Example award and pay questions, with the real answers.

Example 1 of 5“We own a café in Brisbane and are hiring a full-time barista, aged 24, on 38 hours a week. As well as making coffee and serving customers, they will open and close the café on their own, count the till, take deliveries and show two junior staff the ropes. Which award applies, which classification level fits, and what are the minimum hourly rates for weekdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays?”

Award, pay rate and underpayment checks you can send.

Pay rates and classifications for every modern award, including the Restaurant, Hospitality, General Retail, Fast Food, Clerks, SCHADS, Cleaning, Security and Children's Services awards.

  • Which award applies

Describe the business and the role, or attach the position description. Get back the modern award most likely to cover it, the reasons and any close alternatives.

  • Classification

List the duties the employee carries out. Get back the classification level that fits, with the award's own descriptors quoted beside them.

  • Pay rates, penalties and allowances

Minimum rates, casual loading, overtime, weekend and public holiday penalties and allowances, for the award and level, with the pay guide referenced.

  • Payslip and timesheet checks

Attach a payslip and the hours worked. Get back what the award requires for that pay period, set against what was paid, with the working shown.

  • Rates at an earlier date

For an underpayment review or claim, ask for the classification and rates that applied on any past date, as they stood then.

  • Underpayment reviews

Send an employee's award, classification, hours and what they were paid each year. Get back what the award required in each year, the shortfall for each year and in total, and the points to check before you remediate.

  • Final pay and leave

Final pay on termination and leave accrued, set out step by step so you can follow the working. Long service leave is calculated under the NSW rules.

  • Award changes

What changed in an award or after the annual wage review, from when, and what it means for your staff.

  • Employment law questions

The National Employment Standards, Fair Work Act sections, Fair Work Ombudsman guidance and the cases, each with its source.

FAQ's.

Do I need an account?

No. There are no accounts, logins or sign-up. Email your question from your usual address and the answer comes back to the same thread.

Does it cost anything?

No. There is no cost and no sign-up. Email your question to FairPay@GetitRight.ai and the answer comes back to you.

Is it legal or payroll advice?

No. It is research to support your own judgement. Every answer shows the award clauses, pay guides and sources it relies on so you can check it, and the decision is always yours.

Which awards does it cover?

Pay rates, classifications and award clauses for the modern awards and the National Employment Standards, including the rates that applied in earlier years. Automated payslip audits cover a growing list of awards; for the others, the answer sets out the working so you can check it.

What about enterprise agreements?

Support for enterprise agreements is coming soon. For now, FairPay works from the modern awards and the National Employment Standards, so if an agreement covers the employee, the answer will not reflect its terms. It can still give you the award rates to compare against, for example to check that an agreement's base rates are not below the award's, as the Fair Work Act requires.

Can I send a payslip or a timesheet?

Yes. Attach it to the email with the employee's award and classification if you know them. If you do not, say what the employee does and it works them out first.

Can I ask a follow-up question?

Yes. Reply to the answer email with your follow-up, such as another pay period, a different classification or a question about a clause. It keeps the earlier question and documents in mind, so you do not need to send them again.

How quickly will I get an answer?

Most answers arrive in a minute or two. There is no hold queue, no form to fill in and no waiting for an adviser to get back to you.

What if I don't get a reply?

Most answers arrive in a minute or two. If yours has not, check your junk or spam folder first. If it is not there, contact us and we will look into it. We only reply to email we can confirm came from you, so a message sent without a digital signature from your email provider may not get a reply.

Is what we send kept confidential?

Yes. What you send is confidential by default and is never used to train AI models, by us or by the providers we use.
